Not the Job!

Things I like to do that aren’t my job:

Country/Western Dancing
Recreational Shooting
Reading, especially Science Fiction. Some of my favorite authors are:
  • Robert Anson Heinlein, The Dean of Science Fiction
  • David Weber, Science Fiction that’s all 3D
  • Kim Stanley Robinson, textbooks for Mars colonization
  • Steven R. Brust, Fantasy
  • Douglas R. Hofstadter, 1980 Pulitzer prize winner
  • Dave Barry, Humorist
Collecting Humor
Most of the current contents of my humor archive was stolen from Dave Niblett. Dave maintained our joint archive for many years. (That is the archive we had together, not our stash of joints…) Mine has fallen into neglect, but will be resurrected shortly.
Maintaining my own little fortune server.
Cooking
I’m always looking for new recipe submissions. One of these days I’m going to put the ones I have into a DBMS and write a CGI interface. (You didn’t think I could resist an opportunity for automation, did you?)
Playing with GIMP
The GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP) is a free Photoshop-like software package that compiles under most Unix variants. This is free software at its best. GIMP supports a plug-in architecture, so it’s incredibly expandable. It also has an extension called Script-Fu that allows the automation of most graphics manipulations via scripts written in Scheme.
